SB 501 (banning gas chambers) is now law! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jeanne Guise & Theresa Bruner

SB 501 is now part of the state animal code as of August 29th, 2009! This bill regulates current gas chamber euthanasia and prohibits new use.
Thank you for helping to get this important bill passed in special session and signed by the Governor. It is a tragedy that so many healthy cats and dogs, kittens and puppies die for lack of homes; at least they should do so painlessly. Again, it passed unanimously in both houses. There is a grandfather clause in the bill allowing a county who has a chamber from a person that routinely manufactures and installs gas chambers to continue. However, it will have to be inspected and only a Certified Euthanasia Technician can operate the chamber. We believe there are 7 counties using the chamber. With the new law and required inspections, we will find out how many of the 55 counties are actually using this method of euthanasia. FOHO wants ALL counties to eliminate the gas chamber and use the preferred method of euthanasia by injection. Read the entire bill to find out if your county is illegally using the gas chamber. Here is the final bill which is now law (pdf file)

Please check our affiliate legislative action website for a recount of the 2010 legislative session  www.fohowvla.org.   Our spay neuter bill was placed into interim study.  We will regroup on that bill and other important legislation for next year.   Notable bills that passed were the 3 year rabies bill, a livestock standards bill and a spay neuter bill for adopted greyhounds.
