Information on euthanasia data in WV: Please note that we have been compiling euthanasia data from animal shelters from 2008 to the present. Current data trends being tracked indicate that we are not winning the war against pet overpopulation.   In 2011, a projected 144,000 animals were taken into WV shelters and 77,000 killed.  39% of the dogs and 71% of the cats entering WV shelters needlessly die.  WV counties spent over 8 million dollars impounding, caring for and euthanizing those unwanted animals.   This is a fixable problem.  We need spay/neuter funding to change this trend.

FOHO WV has been surveying WV Animal Shelters on intake and euthanasia since 2008. In 2008, we had a cross section of 12 shelters from different areas of the state that provided good statistics.  We also had data from a 2009 survey through a WVU student but again the data was not complete.   There is no central compilation of data in WV for shelters data.    The WV Vet Board in 2011 had CAETs reporting euthanasia rates and at FOHO's request they will add intake rates to their 2013 report.  We are continuing to collect data will have that by the next legislative session in 2013.  Spay neuter is a critical missing ingredient. We need legislation to be passed providing needed funding to reverse this trend. If you are an intake shelter in WV, please let us know your statistics. Fill out the online survey and help us to provide the needed data to track our battle against this over-whelming problem of pet over-population in West Virginia.
